Join Gerber/Hart’s Play Reading Club on Saturday April 26th at 11 AM as they read along to “Smilin’ Through” (1919) by Jane Cowl and Jane Murfin. We’ll divvy up the roles, read aloud, and have a short discussion after. Also be sure to check out Forbidden Love at the Desert’s Edge on display in the Sandfield Exhibition Gallery which features Hal Shipman’s 2024 interpretation of the play! Come to read or just to listen!
This event will be held in Gerber/Hart’s Community Room (6500 N Clark Street, 2nd floor). Elevator located at end of hallway (past Howard Brown front desk)
A few copies of the script will be available for use but please bring a phone, laptop, or other device to read the online pdf if you can!

About the Play
“Smilin’ Through (2024),” currently on display in Gerber/Hart’s Sandfield Gallery, is an adaptation by the original 1919 play, “Smilin’ Through.” Incredibly popular at the time, this now largely forgotten play inspired three film versions, a title song recorded over twenty five times and even the names of an entire generation of women. The content and history of the play speak to such diverse issues as opportunities for women, corporate synergies, spiritualism and how society treats injured and disabled veterans of war.
